Question - (11 December 2006) 2 Answers - (Newest, 29 December 2006)
A male age 51-59, anonymous writes:

This is a real-time math problem that my family just encountered. My mother-in-law passed away and the family is trying to divide up expenses. I thought it was simple solution but I was surprised at the creative math everyone used. It is still not resolved. Here is the problem.

Total funeral expenses are: $16,320.02

$12,845.88 was paid up front by Kim

$ 3,474.14 was paid up front by Mary

There are seven family members total.

1. Kim

2. Mary

3. Paul

4. Pierre

5. Danni

6. Cathy

7. Christie

The question is how should the total cost be divided out and who should still pay and who should be reimbursed what amount(s)? Could you help on this? It would be greatly appreciated.

A female reader, JustJessie909 +, writes (29 December 2006):

well it comes out to $2331.45 (rounded up) - So kim should get back 10,514.43 and Mary should get $1,142.69 and that solves it really pretty simple math. But I agree with the comment before. Celebrate the life of mom!

A reader, anonymous, writes (20 December 2006):

Each should pay $2,400 into a pot. Cover the cost of the funeral and the left over money should be put towards a slap up meal. Don't bicker over the cost of stuff. The people who have paid so much should be reimbursed and draw a line under the whole thing.

Take care

xx
